ILLUSTRATOR PEN TOOL TUTORIAL by minako25 ILLUSTRATOR PEN TOOL TUTORIAL by minako25
:iconstar-gentle-uterus: asked for some help learning how to draw TDI like I do. So this is the best way I can think to show him... her... ack... I'm not sure.
This is a more advanced tutorial for someone who already gets the basics of PEN tools and ANCHORS and SEGMENTS. So this is my big secret... Now you can all go out and buy illustrator for like $300 and draw like me :)
Okay really it's only to get the cleanest lines and flexibility possible.

Mind you I know of atleast 2 more ways to get this same look... but this is the easiest for me and gives me the most control. If you find a way that works better for you... go for it!

Oh and the finished piece is here [link]

could you help me out? you really seem to know what your doing and that tut of yours really gave me a better concept of the pen tool in illustrator, not to mention i get why artists prefer illustrator to photoshop

i'm familiar with photoshop but still new to illustrator and see, the pen tool is still doing my head in, how do the curves work? i get the straight lines... those i can understand

and why use the pen tool? (as opposed to drwaing freehand) its complicated... but i do admit there are advantages like having cleaner lineart and such

any help and tips would be much appreciated

Arrgh XD I don't know why this pen tool hates me so much. Every time I make a new line it makes a new layer...why? XD I'm so confused.

since you have the same program i was hopeing you could help me out, theres something oing on and i just cant seem to fix it.

when i use the pen tool and fill in the shape the edges seem to create a whitepixle-like line between the outline and the fill. i checked the pixle preview and that isnt it. you think you know whats going on? it would be greatly appreciated.

it is simular. made by the same company. While photoshop is better for photos, illustrator is better for ... drafting. i guess that's one way to put it.

Photoshop does have a pen tool too, but it's just not versatile at all. Illustrator is VERY forgiving fixing mistakes and changings curves, photoshop you have to pretty much get it right the first time. I'm not even that good.

Basically Flash and Illustrator are the same thing - only Flash animates stuff. The one class I had for FLASH was uber impressed I already knew illustrator inside and out and basically could import all my illustrator files into Flash and use them.
Too bad I learned nothing from that class... I got violently sick for 3/5 classes. Blah.

Bummer you got sick, bad timing and all. I hope the course wasn't expensive.

I went and checked after the post. But you refer to yourself as one of the Sailor Starlights... so I kinda assumed girl at first. Guess we know what happens when I assume.

Shading? That's a tough one - I mean I really don't shade any of my TDI work... only on occasion. I think you need to search the TUTORIAL catagory for shading help. I'm sure there are lots of other deviants who've made great guides.
